XXIII IUFRO World Congress
Welcome Message from the Prime Minister
It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you to Korea and the XXIII World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).
I am aware that IUFRO is one of the world’s oldest and largest international institutions, which was established in 1892 and has more than 700 member institutes and universities in 110 countries. We are honored and proud to host this significant event in Seoul.
The world is now faced with challenges such as economic turbulence, scarce resources and environmental degradation caused by climate change.
These are the tasks that all of us should tackle together. In order to join the global effort, the Korean Government proclaimed “Low Carbon, Green Growth” as a new national vision on August 15th, 2008 and is exerting utmost efforts to realize the vision.
Under such circumstances, the world is paying attention to forests because they play a critical role in mitigating climate change as a carbon sink, and forestry is a cost-effective industry. In this regard, the Congress title “Forests for the Future: Sustaining Society and the Environment” is all the more relevant and timely.
Korea has successfully greened the land devastated during World War II in a short period. Making use of our experience and technology, the Korean Government is committed to the combat against desertification and the rehabilitation of damaged tropical forests by expanding cooperative projects. Furthermore, as a responsible member of the international community, we will strengthen cooperation with other nations to conserve forests in the world.
I sincerely hope that the Congress will be a fruitful forum to build the cornerstone for developing innovative forest and green technologies.
I wish you all the best and a successful conference.

ECO-EFFICIENCY FOR SUSTAINABILITY: THE CHALLENGE
The challenge of sustainability
Increasing affluence and population growth will destroy the environment and hit the poor, unless extreme improvements in eco-efficiency are realised. Combining with reduced growth of the richest in the world we may realise environmental improvement. An extreme reduction in total environmental impacts is required, as many effects are time delayed, like climate change and ecosystem deterioration, and we are overshooting sustainable marks already. How to align the economy with the environment is the prime challenge, changing the economy in the process in more than just a quantitative way
